Africalia 'Creativity is Life' Laureate - Whispering Silence 2020
Received EUR €1,500. “Whispering Silence” is a digital storytelling project that gives voice to ten individuals impacted by the pandemic. The contributors look into the past by sharing a ngano (folklore) in search of solutions for the present COVID-19 environment. The contributors share their coping stories and speak to the future about cultural values they want people to re-engage in a “new world”. P
Pro Helvetia - Whispering Silence VR 2021
Received US $3,000. ‘Whispering Silence’ is a digital storytelling project which will document the lives of people who still champion traditional customs. Anchoring itself on profiling traditional dancers, vocalists, healers and, leaders, the project will feature storytellers from two known hubs of traditional customs, Manicaland and Masvingo provinces. These will be complemented by contributions from storytellers in Harare province. During its first phase, funded by Africalia and the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation of Belgium, ‘Whispering Silence’ sought solutions for the ongoing COVID-19 induced environment through the retelling of ngano. A ngano, the Shona term for folklore, is used to impart life lessons, alternating humans and animals as protagonists. The timelessness of the stories told offered solutions to navigating the ‘new world’ and how each storyteller hopes communities will re-engage in a post-COVID-19 environment. In Phase Two, ‘Whispering Silence VR’ will strengthen its virtual reality component. Supported by Pro Helvetia through the ANT grant, the exploratory project will lead to shared experiences, driving unique perspectives leading to the acknowledgment of traditional practices and how they shape us in our everyday lives. Over eight months, ‘Whispering Silence VR’ will collect convene stories from 10 contributors into a single online exhibition accessible to the public.

Received US $3,000. In Zimbabwe, persons with disabilities tend to get left behind owing to the negative cultural beliefs associated with their respective impairments. They are often seen as the result of affairs and witchcraft and addressed as people with ‘bad blood’ (UNESCO, 2020). This has led families to hide children with disabilities, leading to low uptake of clinical and rehabilitation services to ease the child’s life. In my most recent years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with organisations that advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities. Through our collaborative work, I’ve been privy to the conversations and the challenges faced, online and offline. Able Child, the Christian Blind Mission, and UNESCO have created platforms where I co-created images with their program participants, with one campaign raising £2.3 million for eye health in Zimbabwe using multimedia assets I generated. My interest in working with people with disabilities is fueled by experiences shared by my late mother during the early years of her career as a teacher for children with special needs and the interaction I had with Aïssatou Cissé, Special Advisor to the President of Senegal. My mother created, in me, a curiosity to understand people, connect with them, and remove any barriers set against mutual understanding. Aïssatou showed me what is possible when people with disabilities are given a voice, and this fashioned a question in my mind: ‘What can I do to ensure people with disabilities are seen and heard?’ ‘unaltered.unfiltered’ is a series of imagery depicting the day-to-day lives of people with disabilities. The project offers an opportunity to reshape the narratives on what ‘disability’ is for able people and those with impairments—creating a mutual understanding. The project will be a culmination of shared power in storytelling spearheaded by content planning sessions with selected people with disabilities. Through ‘unaltered.unfiltered’ I will showcase what inclusion should look like when it is implemented. I also want to share the pride people with disabilities have in owning their bodies and the joy from everyday moments and special occasions too. I want to dismantle the African stereotype that people with disabilities are not seen and the modern experience where they are ridiculed on social media. Through this project, I also hope to inspire other photographers to be more aware and deliberate when they work with people with disabilities. I also want to embolden people with disabilities to share their stories until their conversations are mainstreamed beyond documents to the implementation of inclusive environments. From a creative perspective, I would like to employ a combination of documentary-style photography and posed images that may be repurposed. I am interested in photographing people with disabilities at work, during therapy sessions, at school, and shopping for their household needs. As with the title ‘unaltered.unfiltered’ the images will showcase honest storytelling with a natural feel while presenting the unfiltered perspectives people with disabilities have of themselves. In addition to this, I will co-create images with them, images that show what exclusion looks like.
