Job Description
Kenya Communications Hub is a narrative hub working to strengthen social justice
movements’ capacity to shift perspectives on social justice issues. Voices for Our New
Economy is a KCH initiative to increase the number of progressive Kenyan economic
analysts and narratives in mainstream and independent media through our
Spokesperson Network – a representation from academia, civil society, informal
settlements, the public service and other critical spaces – with special emphasis on
women analysts and experts.
The Press ORicer supports VONE’s flagship Spokesperson Network programme, placing
people in media on a regular basis, developing and maintaining media contacts and
meeting the needs of participants on the Spokesperson Network. Your main day-to-day
role will be building Voices for Our New Economy’s visibility among strategic media
actors to build our media list, identifying opportunities for members of our
Spokesperson Network and coordinating between them and producers to secure TV,
radio, independent media and print media opportunities for them.
Most days will involve spotting opportunities in the news early in the day that would be
relevant for the spokespeople we have on our books, checking in with the various
spokespeople to see who is available, formatting pitches to put out on our media list
and then fixing up the details when media bids come in to ensure that bookings happen
smoothly and eRectively.
Maintaining a series of good relationships is essential to this project. You will be
expected to maintain good relationships with people on the Spokesperson Network and
to play an active role in their well-being as they navigate challenging media situations;
and maintain good connections with media actors and meeting their needs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Identify relevant stories in the news and subsequently pitch and book
spokespeople into broadcast media (print, television and radio) and independent
digital media and respond to media requests.
2. Prepare spokespeople for media opportunities. This support can include editing
top lines, and brief interview practice.
3. Identify clippable content, create clips and post on social media.
4. Play an active role in the wider Voices of Our New Economy project, attending
and feeding into key messaging and narrative development.
5. Build and expand KCH media contacts; help populate a repository to build our
collective knowledge of actors in the Kenyan media landscape
Key Skills, Experience and
• Experience in journalism, communications, media relations or a role that
incorporates these skills.
• Experience with building and maintaining relationships with journalists.
• Interest in economic, environmental and/or social justice campaigning
• Good writing and editing skills, including an eye for detail.
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
• Ability to work well under pressure, meet the demands of a dynamic organisation
and accommodate changing circumstances.
• An aRinity with Kenya Comms Hub’s aims and objectives and organisational
values of solidarity, generosity and respect.
• Willingness to reflect and learn, including sharing failures and uncertainties.
Openly taking feedback from the team and members of the community on your
conduct and work.
• Commitment to inclusion of women, sexual/gender minorities and persons with
