SUMMARY
Die 1842 veröffentlichte Novelle beschreibt die geheimnisvollen Folgen eines Mordes. Unter einer Buche findet sich die Leiche eines Juden. In die Baumrinde ritzt man daraufhin den Satz: “Wenn du dich diesem Orte nahest, so wird es dir ergehen, wie du mir getan hast.” Sucht der Mörder den Baum wieder auf?
