SUMMARY
Charles was born doing-time beneath the poverty line in Los Angeles. He came of age during the post civil rights/Black Panther Era in South Central an area that was still scarred by the Watts riot. Though surrounded by poverty, Charles was also surrounded by a strong sense of community as South Central was 98% Black American then, and Black Americans had just survived the water hoses and dogs of The Civil Rights Movement, not to mention, the FBI/LAPD extermination of the Black Panther Party. The elimination of militant youth from South Central left a void that was filled by gangs. Like many socially traumatized Black American youth uncertain of their direction in life, Charles was swept up in the gang craze as it burned through the city. He was bewitched by the outlawish glamor of it all and shitted on family, school, and career dreams to carry the blue flag only to discover that all roads lead to the graveyard or the prison yard.
