Role Description
As part of our commitment to journalistic excellence, we are looking for a dynamic and experienced candidate to join our fact-checking team. This is a full-time, on-site role. The Fact-Checking Lead will be responsible for verifying the accuracy of information contained in our content, conducting in-depth digital investigations, collaborating with investigative journalists, overseeing the content production done by the fact-checkers on team, and ensuring the integrity of published content. The role involves reviewing and analyzing data, scrutinizing sources, and maintaining high journalistic ethics.
Key Responsibilities
- Planning, assigning reporters and coordinating the production of content for Africa Uncensored‘s platforms, principally, but not limited to Piga Firimbi, Africa Uncensored‘s platform for fact-checking, data journalism and community-building
- Taking the lead in the ideation, conceptualization and development of fact-checking and other projects
- Publishing content for said platforms principally, but not limited to: audiovisual, audio and text fact-checks, short data-driven stories (explainers, visualizations and stories that include data), and verifying leaks and stories shared by Africa Uncensored’s partners.
- Managing budgets allocated to the (fact-checking) desk
- Developing sources and contacts for various storytelling assignments
- Developing annual plans, short, mid-term and long-term strategies for the (fact-checking) desk
- Taking the lead in collaborating with other organizations on like-minded projects
- Any other duties as may be assigned by the Senior Editor
Required Work Experience
- Any first/undergraduate degree
- Eye for news/stories
- Strong editing skills
- Strong OSINT skills
- Good communication and leadership skills
- Working knowledge of content management systems, especially WordPress
- Analytical skills – advanced knowledge of a spreadsheet program, preferably Microsoft Excel
Candidates with at least 5 years experience in journalism in any role as a fact-checker, reporter and/or editor will have an advantage.
